Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Implants are artificial and biocompatible tooth roots that work together with a restoration, like a crown or bridge, to fully replace teeth that are missing from your mouth. They’re one of the most comfortable, effective, and natural-looking means for replacing missing teeth available in modern dentistry.

Dental implants can also work with dentures to replace all of the teeth in your upper jaw, lower jaw, or both.

In some cases, your implant-supported dentures might only require four strategically placed implants to hold an entire arch of teeth in place. This option, called All-on-4® implants, gives you a denture solution that’s unparalleled in its comfort and convenience.

How do implants work?

Your dentist or oral surgeon performs surgery to embed your implants in your jawbone, where they fuse with your bone tissue. Your implants can fuse with your jawbone because their material – titanium or ceramic – is biocompatible and does not register as a foreign substance in your body.

Once your implant fuses with your jawbone, it works as a strong and sturdy foundation to support a restoration and complete your tooth replacement. The result is a replacement tooth that’s nearly identical in form and function to your natural teeth.

How are implants beneficial to my oral health?

Because implants mimic your natural tooth structures, they give you a replacement tooth that looks, feels, and functions like your natural teeth.

Implants tend to be more comfortable, stable, and secure than removable dentures, and they don’t require you to remove enamel from neighboring teeth like you have to do with bridges.

Implants are also better for your overall oral health because they provide stimulation to your jawbone. When your jawbone isn’t properly stimulated by a tooth root, the bone tissue can deteriorate or resorb, which makes your jaw weaker and creates a sunken-in appearance in your face. The stimulation from an implant keeps the bone tissue in your jaw healthy and strong.

Are implants for me?

Dental implants are an excellent solution for most patients, but there are a few requirements that you need to satisfy in order to be an appropriate candidate.

One of those requirements is healthy gums. If you have gum disease, the team at East Village Dental needs to treat it before you receive implants.

You also need to have substantial bone tissue in your jaw in order for dental implants to work. Because dental implants essentially anchor into your jawbone, there needs to be enough material for them to fuse to.

If you’ve been missing teeth for an extended period of time, you might need to have a bone graft to augment your jawbone before you can get dental implants.
