Sleep Apnea Q & A

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that causes you to stop and start breathing during sleep. Without proper treatment, sleep apnea can prevent you from getting a restful night’s sleep. It also increases your risk of more serious health problems, including heart disease and diabetes.

At East Village Dental, the team doesn’t diagnose sleep apnea, but they do provide treatment using custom oral devices. If you have sleep apnea and want to investigate treatment options outside of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), make an appointment at East Village Dental today.

Are there different types of sleep apnea?

There are three different types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central sleep apnea, and complex sleep apnea. Though similar, each type of sleep apnea is a result of something different.

OSA occurs when the soft tissues at the back of your throat relax as you sleep, blocking your trachea. Ultimately, this causes you to wake up gasping for air.

Central sleep apnea occurs when your brain fails to send your respiratory system breathing signals. Complex sleep apnea is the rarest form of sleep apnea and features a combination of OSA and central sleep apnea symptoms.

What are the symptoms of sleep apnea?

The symptoms of sleep apnea vary in each person and depend on the type of sleep apnea you have. However, telltale signs include:

  • Difficulty staying asleep
  • Loud snoring
  • Morning headaches
  • Difficulty paying attention
  • Gasping for air during sleep

As the condition progresses, you might also experience mood changes and irritability.

Who gets sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea affects people of all ages and races, but there are certain factors that may increase your risk, including:

  • Being male
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Having a thick neck
  • Using alcohol or sedatives regularly
  • Smoking
  • Nasal congestion

Sleep apnea also runs in families; if your parents or siblings have sleep apnea, you’re more likely to as well.

How is sleep apnea treated?

At East Village Dental, the team treats sleep apnea using custom oral devices. After you receive a sleep apnea diagnosis from your general practitioner, make an appointment.

During your consultation, your dentist conducts an oral exam and asks questions about your symptoms. Afterward, your dentist takes molds of your teeth. They send these molds to a laboratory that manufactures a custom oral appliance.

Sleep apnea appliances push your lower jaw forward to promote adequate airflow. For cases of mild or moderate sleep apnea, a custom oral appliance is worth considering.
