Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin, tooth-colored shells of porcelain that your East Village Dental provider bonds to the surface of your natural, permanent teeth.

Some people only get one veneer to address a problem like a chipped or broken tooth. Other people get between six and eight in order to achieve an even, symmetrical smile.

What types of issues can dental veneers correct?

Dental veneers are incredibly versatile. The team at East Village Dental regularly uses veneers to correct a variety of oral imperfections, including:

  • Gaps in teeth
  • Broken teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Pointed teeth
  • Unusually shaped teeth

You might also benefit from veneers if you have yellow or discolored teeth that don’t respond to traditional teeth whitening treatments. Veneers are stain-resistant and can last a decade or more.

What happens during a consultation for veneers?

At your initial veneers consultation, your East Village Dental provider reviews your medical history, asks you about your goals for treatment, and does an oral exam. Your dentist also takes a series of digital X-rays to evaluate the health and position of your teeth.

Your dentist also looks for signs of tooth decay or gum disease. If you have any of these problems, you may not qualify for veneers until you receive treatment. If everything looks good and your teeth and gums are healthy, your dentist moves forward with treatment.

What is the process for receiving veneers?

To prepare your teeth for veneers, your East Village Dental provider administers a local anesthetic, numbing your tooth roots and gums. Once the anesthesia sets in, your dentist carefully shaves a layer of enamel from the surface of your teeth, equal to the thickness of your veneers.

After preparing your teeth, your dentist takes molds using dental putty. Your dentist sends these molds to a laboratory that manufactures your veneers.

A week or two after your first appointment, you return to East Village Dental. At your second appointment, your dentist lines up your veneers with your teeth, makes any necessary adjustments, and bonds them in place using dental cement.

How do I care for my veneers?

You care for your veneers like you would your natural, permanent teeth. To keep them in good shape, brush your teeth twice a day, floss once a day, and visit the team at East Village Dental every six months for a professional cleaning and exam.

You should also try and avoid bad habits like biting your nails or chewing on ice cubes, as these activities can chip or crack your veneers.
